Crumpets and Harry Potter!
Unable to resist this due to a post on Tym:
Not sure if anyone else is quite so anal regarding Potter (not anally potty though) that they will have read about the indignation, expressed by Gleick (New York Times, 10 July 2000) regarding the translation by Scholastic Press of "The Philosophers Stone" from English to American. His greatest scorn was not regarding the title change to "The sorcerers Stone" - lets face it, to many Americans Philosophy is a form of Sorcery. No, the issue was, surprisingly, in the translation of the English word "Crumpets" into the ghastly Americanism - "English Muffins". Tempting as it is to spell out the whole issue here, that would be wasteful - so here is the link to the whole thing.
It is marvelous to see that there are people who can speak the Queen's English who are willing to spend their time pulling up our transatlantic cousins. Hip, hip horrah!
As always - tata and taekwon
