Canon
I had a big post on this but IE crashed so I am putting a short post instead.
I have purchased a Digital Rebel XT
Complete with
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
1Gb CF Card (80x)
256 CF Card (out of the box)
I would like to buy the EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM lens - but will need to save for about four months to buy this - maybe I will see if the family can club together with Ru for Christmas and then I can top up to help out.
I also have CS2 installed and am looking to sit the ACE exam for Photoshop in November - but thats very much my kind of thing as it is a shiny new software toy.....
So - get ready for my p-poor images to get uploaded to Taekwon-DoDo and I look forward to ridicule as I try to get upto speed.

Think about getting the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens
Advantages:
fast (f1.8 is about 1.5 stops faster than f2.8 - this means that where you'd be shooting at 1/15seconds on a slower lens, you could be shooting at approx 1/50 seconds)
cheap (cost me $170 in Singapore, i gather it's as low as USD$80 abroad)
good (check out the lens tests here, and here)
Disadvantage:
no zoom
effectively a 75mm lens' field of view (which I find a bit too narrow)
All this means you'll have to zoom with your feet - i.e. walk backwards a bit - if you want something other than portraits. Still, I don't think you can beat the value for money of this lens. I got one for K's Canon 66, and the equivalent Nikon lens for my D70 (almost identical in price and performance), and my only gripe is still that the forced 1.5x crop on a digital means I don't get the field of view that I'm most comfortable with, which is the 50mm fov.

One more thing I forgot to mention: if you read the reviews on the net, this lens has a reputation for being less than sturdy. I've been told that if you drop it, it won't survive. Still, at USD$80 per lens, you can it's a steal for a fast lens.

saw the 50mm f1.8 for Eur 129 and nearly bought it. the reason for changing mind - saw the 50mm f1.4 (!!) in another shop. that costs over Eur 800!
seriously thinking of getting a fixed lens with a wide angle - something equivalent to 35mm (after the 1.6x crop) or even wider. would cost a bomb i guess.

hey!
wes here. wahj is right, the 50mm 1.8 is great! the 50mm 1.4 is about S$600+ in singapore. and the 70-200 IS has some serious issues, http://www.robgalbraith.com forums have some frus users.
ru, try to find contax wides, they are great to use and way better than canon but got no exposure read out and manual focus only. http://www.cameraquest.com for adaptors. i'm on a 28mm zeiss, cheap and good stuff.

129Euro is about USD$150? That's way above the pricing: prices on the internet are around USD$90: you're better off buying online.
